New overtime rule still includes newspaper exemption

Posted May 25, 2016

Both the National Newspaper Association and the Newspaper Association of America are disappointed in the new overtime rules announced this week by the U.S. Department of Labor.

And there still appears to be confusion on that newspaper exemption that has existed in the past.

Richard Karpel of NNA points out that the exemption for single title newspapers with circulations under 4,000 and for small groups of newspapers with cumulative circulation of under 4,000 stilll remains.

However, if your cumulative circulation of the newspapers you own is more than 4,000, NNA says the situation is not as clear.

Richard Karpel of NNA said: “The precise rule is unclear due to varying rulings in different districts, but in general such publishers shouldn’t expect to receive an exemption for individual titles with circulation under 4,000."
