Kansas Press Association Legislative Director Dena Sattler has served as editor-publisher of the Garden City Telegram since April 2004.
Her newspaper career started in 1985 with a summer internship at her hometown daily newspaper, The Hawk Eye in Burlington, Iowa, while she was a student at the University of Iowa. She was hired the same year as a general assignment reporter for The Hawk Eye.
During 13 years in The Hawk Eye’s newsroom, Sattler also covered the cops-courthouse beat and served as a feature writer, lifestyles editor, sports editor and weekend editor.
She was selected in 1998 for Harris Enterprises’ management training program, which sent her to three Harris papers in Kansas — The Garden City Telegram, The Hutchinson News and The Ottawa Herald — where she worked in every phase of newspaper operations.
After completion of the training program and a stint as assistant to the publisher at The Ottawa Herald, Sattler became advertising-marketing director for The Garden City Telegram in 2003. Less than a year later, she moved into The Telegram’s editor-publisher position.
She served as KPA president in 2013-14.
