Morgan, William Y.

Billy Morgan was prominent in public affairs in Kansas for over 40 years. He held the offices of state printer, lieutenant governor, chairman of the state board of regents, and served in five sessions of the legislature.

Morgan published the Emporia Gazette during the early 1890’s, then moved to Hutchinson, where he served as editor and publisher of the Hutchinson News until his death in February, 1932, at age 65.

According to the March,1932, edition of The Jayhawker Press, “The thing that made Billy Morgan universally loved was his infectious smile and his genuine friendliness....He was a hard worker and a prolific writer and what he wrote was always interesting and good.”

Added the Jayhawker, “Those of us who have lived near him and watched his newspapers from day to day feel the loss possibly a little more than others. His good humor under all kinds of conditions and his ability to make friendships are characteristics that all of us should strive for.”
