Southeast District Director
Peter Cook is publisher of the Parsons Sun and in that capacity also serves as advertising director for the Parsons Sun and its sister newspaper, The Chanute Tribune.
Before moving to Parsons in 2011, Cook was general manager of the Elkin Tribune in Elkin, NC.
In his 50 years in the newspaper industry, Cook has served as a publisher, general manager, advertising director, managing editor, news editor, reporter and sports writer. He has worked for daily and weekly newspapers in rural and metropolitan markets.
He served as retail advertising manager for the Tampa Tribune, advertising director for Sun Publications in Overland Park and was sales and marketing director for the Mount Airy News in Mount Airy, NC.
He began his career gathering little league scores for the Tampa Tribune in Tampa, Florida, and believes that job at the age of 16 taught him the importance of connecting with readers.
“You learn very quickly how important it is to get names in the paper – and to spell them correctly,” Cook said. “I think it was that experience that has always led me to community journalism. I like being close to the community. It’s very gratifying to walk into a coffee shop in the morning and see people reading my newspaper. That’s why we do what we do in this business.”
He received his B.A. in Philosophy and Religion at St. Andrews Presbyterian College in Laurinburg, NC, and his MBA in Marketing from the University of Phoenix. Cook is not married, but has a daughter who is executive director of a YMCA in Indiana, and three grandchildren.
