Do you outsource your layout and design work?

May 25, 2011

Today's question is about whether any newspapers or groups of newspapers in Kansas are using outside sources to lay out their pages, etc. Here are the results:

From Dennis Anderson, Lawrence Journal-World

We don't, but I ran into someone at ACES from the New York Times company based in Florida that's hoping to start doing this service for newspapers nationwide. He was there to recruit copy editors and paginators.

His name is Patrick Sanders. He can be reached at 352-338-3124 or patrick [dot] sanders [at] nytrng [dot] com.

From Steve Wade, Pittsburg Morning Sun

GateHouse papers only do on a specialty page basis. We are, however, exploring.

From Shana Guiot, Parsons Sun, Chanute Tribune

No, we don't at the Parsons Sun nor the Chanute Tribune. We did try outsourcing our special sections at one time -- DISASTER!

From Tom Taylor, High Plains Journal

We don't outsource our page layout efforts.

From Steve Haynes, Nor'West Newspapers

No. we have experimented with one office helping another, using the Internet to access each other's servers. That works, and we use it sometimes, but we have no incentive to centralize makeup.

From Stephanie Berry, Herington Times

I can tell you that here in Herington, we do not. My associate editor, my graphic editor and I design our pages.

However, one reason I chose to leave my last employment (as a Delivery Desk Producer I at the News-Leader in Springfield, Mo.) was due to the eventual downsizing that the Springfield paper -- and all Gannett newspapers -- will be going through. They will outsource page design to one of five design centers across the United States. For Springfield, that means it will eventually be done at the Des Moines, Iowa, newspaper instead of at Springfield, with a handful of local copy editors to write headlines and edit the content. I chose to look for employment in the weekly newspaper business in Kansas, rather than going through the transfer and layoff procedures in Springfield due to that upcoming change.

I don't know if that's relevant to what you'll be writing, but just wanted to offer my two cents, for what it's worth.

Barbara Proffitt, Linn County News

Just a note to let you know that the Linn County News does not outsource their layout. We do our own design/build on everything, except a few ads that come in pre-built from our advertisers. It will be interesting to read the blog on this.
