Scott City shuts out Cimarron
Cimarron, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–The season opener saw a lot of good, and rough patches at times on Friday night, as the Beavers traveled to Cimarron to face the Bluejays. Despite 13 penalties and four turnovers, Scott City was able to jump out to a 20-0 first quarter lead and shut out the Bluejays 35-0 on a chilly Friday night.
To open the game, Scott City marched down the field in six plays, as Drew Metzger kept the ball on the option and scored from 50 yards out to give the Beavers an early 7-0 lead with the Pablo Solis PAT. Cimarron would come back and convert a third and long, and take it to the Scott City 14 yard line. On fourth down, a 31-yard field goal attempt would be caught by Cooper Irvin, and whe would take it down the Scott City sideline for a 95-yard kick return for a touchdown to extend the lead to 14-0 with 3:55 left in the first quarter, with the Solis kick.
It was Scott City’s 23 non-offensive touchdown since 2013.
After forcing a three-and-out, the Beavers capitalized on a short field in just three plays. With 1:42 left in the first quarter, Cayden Couchman scored from eight yards out to extend the lead to 20-0. The extra point was blocked.
The score would reamin 20-0 until early in the third quarter, when a Cimarron bad snap would go in to the end zone on their opening drive of the seocnd half, and quarterback Cade Sonday was tackled for a safety to give the Beavers a 22-0 lead. Scott City marched down the field 46 yards and took two minutes off on their opening series, as Matthew Wheeler’s 18-yard touchdown run pushed the score to 28-0, as the PAT was blocked.
Scott City’s final points came in the final minute of the game on a six-yard touchdown run by Boston Louden, and the Solis extra point made the final 35-0.
The Beavers would roll up 356 yards of offense, with 272 coming on the ground. Drew Metzger had 87 yards on six carries, while Peyton Bergner had 81 yards on nine carries. Metger threw for 84 yards on 7-14 passing with three interceptions. Bergner had 44 receiving yards on two catches. Cimarron ended up with 143 yards of offense. The Bluejays had minus-22 yards rushing, as Cade Sonday went 11-35 unofficially for 165 yards with an interception. Isayah Barranca had four catches for 98 yards, and McCoy Nash ahd 31 yards rushing on 10 carries.
With the win, Scott City has won nine Week 1 games, the second longest streak in school history. It was their 17th straight GWAC regular season win. The Beavers are now 18-7 all-time against Cimarron, and have won four straight, with three coming by shutout.
Up next for Scott City is their home opener with Wray, Colorado next Friday. The Eagles are the defending Colorado Class 1A State champions, and doubled up Goodland 42-21 on Friday, as they improved to 2-0 on the season.
