Scott City splits home triangular
Scott City, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–For the first time in a week, the Scott City Lady Beaver volleyball team would take the court, as they played host to GWAC members Goodland and Ulysses in their first home outing of the season. Scott City would go 1-1 on the day, with a two-set win over Ulysses 25-20, 25-22, and fell to Goodland in the finale 25-18, 25-19. The Cowgirls would defeat the Lady Tigers in the first match of the day 25-21, 25-15.
Lady Beavers sweep Ulysses
In their first match of the day, Scott City welcomed back junior Peyton Gentry, who had been sidlined with an injury since the middle of the Maroon & Gold Invitational in Hays. The Lady Beavers fell behind early in the first set 7-1, but would slowly cut in to the deficit. They would work their way to a tie at 12, and when they trailed 14-13 in the opening set, Scott City put gother five straight and never trailed the rest of the way. They built a lead late in the set 23-18, before taking a 25-20 win. In the second set, the Lady Tigers jumped out to a 5-1 lead early on, and led 6-3 before a run of four consecutive gave Scott City a 7-6 lead. A 6-1 run by Ulysses gave them a 12-8 lead. The Lady Beavers worked their way back, and used a 10-4 run to build a 22-18 advantage. Scott City saw their lead dwindle to 24-22 late, before they hung on for a 25-22 set two victory.
Peyton Gentry and Piper Fox had six kills, while Crissa Irvin had three service aces.
Cowgirls rally in second set to sweep Scott City
Scott City would score the first point of each set, but the match would belong to Goodland. In the opening set, the Cowgirls jumped out to a 6-2 advantage, and used another run of seven straight to open the set up at 14-5. The Lady Beavers rallied to get to 16-11, only to see Goodland score the next points, and pick up the 25-18 win. Scott City couldn’t have asked for a better start to the second set, as they built an 8-1 lead. Their run would be 11-4 before the Cowgirls rallied for eight consecutive to lead 12-11 midway in the set. The Lady Beavers grabbed the momentum back and took a 17-14 lead, before Goodland rallied for six straight and led 20-17. Scott City got as close as 20-19, but the Cowgirls would close the door on the match with five straight to win 25-19.
Petyon Gentry and Crissa Irvin collected five kills apiece, while Kinleigh Wren served up a pair of aces.
Scott City is 2-9 on the season, and will host a triangular on Thursday against Hill City and Hoxie. Those two teams will face off at 4pm, with Scott City and Hill City at 5 and the Lady Beavers against Hoxie in the finale. Goodland is 4-0 and will be at Burlington on Thursday and Ulysses is now 5-8 and will have a few days off before they compete in Hays for a quadrangular September 18.
