Scott City, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–On a night that was over 30 degrees warmer than week one, it was far from pumpkin spice latte season Friday night at Darner Field, as Scott City played host to the Wray Eagles on Military night. After a scoreless first quarter, the Beavers would score three touchdowns in as many possessions in the second quarter, and cruise to a 34-6 win over the Eagles, snapping their school-record 15-game winning streak.

After a scoreless first quarter, the Beavers would strike through the air in the second quarter. On third and five from the Wray 12, Drew Metzger connected with Cayden Couchman on a 12-yard touchdown to make it 7-0 with 10:54 left before halftime. It was set up by a 72-yard Couchman run that flipped the field. The Eagles would be pinned deep in their own territory, and fumbled at their own two yard line. Scott City would score on a Couchman one-yard run with 8:31 left before halftime to make it 14-0 with the Pablo Solis PAT. Wray moved the ball to the Scott City 48 yard line on their next series. The Eagles would fumble and the Beavers took advantage of the second straight turnover. On the first play of the drive, Couchman scored from 53 yards out to make it 21-0 after the Solis kick with 6:53 left before halftime. Wray would force a turnover on downs and got it down to the Scott City two yard line, but the Beavers would stuff them at the five to close the first half.

To open the second half, Scott City scored quickly to extend their lead to 27-0 with 10:08 left in the third frame, on a Matthew Wheeler 32-yard run. The extra point was blocked. Wray got on the board on the ensuing kickoff, as Bryson Lewis returned it 88 yards for a score to make it 27-6 with 9:58 left in the third quarter. They would be unable to convert the two-point conversion. Scott City would turn to their defense after the Eagles were deep in their territory in the third quarter. After a punters knee touchded at their own five, Wray would throw an interception at the goal line, and the Beavers would also pick off a second Wray pass to set themselves up at their own 40. Scott City took advantage of the Eagle interception and go six plays in 60 yards, capped off by a Wheeler four-yard run with 8.4 seconds left in the third quarter to extend the lead to 34-6 with the Solis PAT.

There would be no scoring in the final 12 minutes, as the Beavers prevailed 34-6.

Scott City tallied 316 yards of offense, led by Cayden Couchman’s 138 yards on eight carries and two touchdowns, and caught two passes for 37 yards and a touchdown. Drew Metzger threw for 58 yards on 5-9 passing with a touchdown. The Beavers rushed for 258 yards.
