Garden City Police respond to multiple incidents Sunday

Garden City, Kan.–Sunday proved to be a steady day shift for Officers from the Garden City Police Department, who responded swiftly to multiple incidents and worked diligently to ensure the safety of our community.

The first incident happended just before 9:30 a.m. Officers responded to a report of a battery that just occurred. They spoke with a woman who stated she had been assaulted and robbed while riding in a vehicle with a man she knew. The investigation revealed that 50-year-old Alexander Guerrero convinced the woman to get into his vehicle by claiming they were going to help his relative. During the drive, Guerrero allegedly struck her repeatedly and prevented her from exiting the vehicle despite several attempts to escape. While driving around town, Guerrero took several personal items from the victim. She eventually managed to flee and alerted law enforcement. Officers responded to Guerrero’s residence, where he initially refused to come out. After a brief standoff, Guerrero surrendered to police and was taken into custody without incident. Guerrero was lodged in the Finney County Jail for Aggravated Kidnapping, Robbery, Domestic Battery, and Interference LEO.

The second incident took place shortly after 6 p.m. Officers were dispatched to the 1500 block of Saint John Street for a reported aggravated assault. Officers spoke with the victim, who indicated that 43-year-old Richard Sky Matthews had approached them at their residence while holding a hammer. The victim tried to de-escalate the situation, but Matthews allegedly threatened to strike them with the weapon. Matthews fled the scene as law enforcement was contacted. Officers quickly located Matthews nearby and took him into custody. He was also found to have multiple outstanding warrants, both within Finney County and from other jurisdictions. He was lodged in the Finney County Jail for Aggravated Assault, Interference LEO, and the outstanding warrants.
