Newton Kansan Athletes of the Week voting opens

The voting process of the Newton Kansan Athletes of the Week for Week 1 of the fall sports season has opened.

This week’s nominees are:                                                                                  

Boys

Eli Gaeddert, junior, Goessel High School, cross country. Won the Class 3-2-1A junior boys’ race at the Swather Special in 17:52.5.

Blayne Wilson, senior, Hesston High School, football. Had 13 carries for 119 yards rushing and a touchdown in a 39-23 loss to Hoisington.

Kolbie Espada, senior, Newton High School, football. Hit 15 of 23 passes for 232 yards, three touchdowns and two interceptions in a 27-18 loss to Andover Central.

Girls

Brookelyn Treaster, junior, Newton High School, cross country. Won the Class 6-5-4A junior girls’ race at the Swather Special in 21:10.3.

Hattie Hecox, junior, Moundridge High School, volleyball. Had 36 kills and three blocks as Moundridge finished 5-0 to win the Goessel Invitational.

Reese Quinn, junior, Hesston High School, cross country. Won the Class 3-2-1A junior girls’ race at the Swather Special in 20:40.1, the top girls’ time in all classes and grades.

Voting is open until midnight Sunday and winners will be announced in the Kansan.

Nominees are selected from results reported to the Kansan as well as culled from various sports statistics sites.

Coaches and administrators may suggest nominees by e-mailing [email protected]. Please include the athlete’s statistics for the week and a photo. Three boys and three girls will be selected as nominees each week.
