Scott City volleyball wins two in Leoti
Leoti, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–The Scott City Lady Beaver volleyball team picked up their first triangular sweep on Thursday, but the foes in front of them made them earn their wins. Scott City would start the day off with a matchup against Wichita County, and take the match 25-17, 16-25, 25-16, and turn around and defeat Dighton 18-25, 30-28, 25-18. The Lady Indians would defeat Dighton in the finale of the day 25-23, 25-19, 25-18.
Scott City holds off Wichita County to open the day
It was a good start for Scott City, and would be bookended with a good match against the Lady Indians. The teams would be tied in the first set at eight, when the Lady Beavers would take off using an 11-3 run to open the set up with a 19-11 lead. The closest Wichita County got was at 22-17, before Scott City closed the set with three straight to win 25-17. It would be the Lady Indians striking early in the second, as they raced out to a 9-3 lead. The Lady Beavers would rally to pull to within 11-8, but a run of 9-2 gave Wichita County a cushion of 20-10, as they ended up winnning 25-16. In the third set, the Lady Indians opened up with a 5-3 lead, only to see a 6-1 run give the Lady Beavers a 9-6 lead. Wichita County tied things up at 11, before a Scott City run of 9-2 gave the Lady Beavers a lead of 20-13, as they cruised to the set three win and the match victory 25-16.
Peyton Gentry woulud have nine kills and Piper Fox had five kills and three block points for Scott City in the win.
Lady Beavers use set two thriller to upend Dighton
Following a brief break, Scott City returned to the court to face the No. 9 ranked team in Class 1A, Division II in Dighton. The Lady Hornets would provide an early sting, as they raced out to an 11-3 lead, forcing the Lady Beavers in to a timeout. Scott City worked their way back in to the set to 14-13, but couldn’t overcome the deficit, as Dighton closed with seven of the final nine points of the opening set at 25-18. Set two would be a battle of atrition for both teams. Seven lead changes and 11 ties would see a set pushed to several extra points. It would be back and forth through the set, as Scott City took a 24-23 lead, only to see Dighton come back for match point. It would go back and forth in the second set, until the Lady Beavers would see a block attempt ruled out on Dighton to force a third set in a 30-28 thriller for Scott City. Through the first half of the third set, it would go back and forth between the two teams. After the Lady Hornets tied the set at 13, Scott City closed out the set and match on a 12-5 run and pick up a 25-18 win.
Piper Fox recorded 13 kills in the win, while Peyton Gentry had eight kills and Lily Lightner had six kills, seven block points and two service aces.
After Thursday, Scott City is 5-10 as they will head to Garden City to battle the Lady Buffaloes on Tuesday.
