Scott City set to host Ulysses in homecoming tilt
Scott City, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–Two teams who have a long history facing off will meet up once again in Week 4 of high school Friday night, as the Scott City Beavers will host the Ulysses Tigers in a GWAC tilt at Darner Field.
Ulysses enters at 1-2 on the year, as they have dropped back to back games. Last Friday night, the Tigers were shut out at home 32-0 by the Holcomb Longhorns. This year’s Tiger team is under first year coach Mitch Foote, as he won his first game of the season at Colby, which snapped a 25-game losing streak. The Tigers are averaging 18 points and nearly 250 yards of offense a contest, while giving up 35 points per game. They are led by Caden Ledesma, who has passed for nearly 500 yard and four touchdowns, and Julian Meraz, who has caught two of those touchdowns.
Scott City played just over 15 minutes of football last Friday night at Hoisington against the Cardinals, before lightning delays eventually forced the cancellation of the game. At the time, the Beavers were up 14-7 with 8:54 left before the break. Peyton Bergner returned the opening kickoff for a touchdown 87 yards and he also added a rushing score in a game that brought out physical play from both teams. This year, the Beavers are at around 35 points a game while averaging 350 yards of offense, while allowing three points and 146 defensive yards per game.
Cayden Couchman and Matthew Wheeler have rushed for three touchdowns and Peyton Bergner has two interceptions on defense.
It’s homecoming tonight at Darner Field. The ceremonies will begin at around 6:30 pm. King candidates are Reed Batterton, Peyton Bergner and Emilio Contreras. Queen candidates are Payton Berry, Kaylee Felker and Ella Frank.
This is the 76th meeting all-time between the schools, as Scott City leads the series 44-30-1, and have won the last nine meetings. Last year, the Beavers won at Ulysses 57-8.
Kickoff is at 7 pm, with pregame coverage at 6:30. You can catch the Ulysses broadcast on Pure Gold KULY AM 1420/97.7 FM and the Scott City broadcast on KSKL, Mix 94.5, and on the Beaver Broadcasting Network. The audio stream is also available on westernkansasnews.com.
