Battle of unbeatens in Hugoton as Scott City visits the Eagles
Scott City, Kan. (weseternkansasnews.com)–A battle of unbeatens will take place at Hugoton tonight, as the 4-0 Eagles play host to the 3-0 Beavers of Scott City in a GWAC and a Class 3A, District 8 matchup.
Scott City would start off slow, but finished strong at home in a 44-7 win over the Ulysses Tigers last Friday night for homecoming. After a scoreless start, the Beavers led 17-7 at the break, and closed out the final 12 minutes with 20 points, en route to the win. They would put up over 500 yards of offense using a balanced attack, with 234 through the air. Cayden Couchman had two touchdowns with 100 yards receiving and nearly 100 rushing yards, while Peyton Bergner had three touchdowns. This year, the Beavers are averaging just over 400 yards of offense and nearly 38 points per game, while allowing just four points a contest and under 200 yards per game. Couchman and Bergner are the top two rushers and receivers this season.
Hugoton is off to a 4-0 start for the second time in three seasons, after a 63-18 thumping of the Colby Eagles on the road last Friday. They jumped out to a 14-0 first quarter lead and led 35-6 at the break. Hugoton had over 600 yards of offense, with nearly 450 rushing yards and nearly had three 100-yard rushers. The Eagles limited Colby to under 200 yards of offense in the win. So far this year, Miguel Hernandez leads the team with over 375 passing yards and nearly 250 rushing yards and nine total touchdowns and Hunter Garza has scored 10 touchdowns. The offenve has put up back to back 60-point performances against Lakin and Colby, and average nearly 51 points a contest while allowing just eight points per game. They are averaging around 300 rushing yards per game.
Scott City leads the series 35-10-1, and have won the last 13 meetings. The Beavers won 50-0 last year at home to open their district schedule. Hugoton’s last win in the series was a 19-13 win in 2005.
