Lady Beavers sweep GWAC Triangular
Scott City, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–Thursday saw three Great West Activities Conference members meet up for a triangular in Scott City, as the Lady Beavers played host to Hugoton in Ulysses inside the Scott Community Events Center. The matches would count toward seeding of the GWAC Tournament in Cimarron on October 11. Scott City would go 2-0 on the day, picking up a pair of two-set victories, as they defeated Hugoton 25-23, 25-13, and took down Ulysses 25-18, 25-13 in the finale. Ulysses would defeat Hugoton in three sets 24-26, 25-21, 25-11.
Lady Beavers fight off scrappy Hugoton squad
Hugoton would put up a good fight like they have throughout the season against the top of the league. In an opening set that saw six ties and three lead changes, it was back and forth early on. Scott City would grab an 8-4 lead only to see Hugoton rally to tie the set at nine. When it looked like the Lady Beavers would pull away, the Lday Eagles responded. Scott City took a 17-10 lead, before a 13-4 Hugoton run gave them a 23-21 lead. It would be the Lady Beavers closing out the set with the final four points to win 25-23. After the Lady Eagles scored the first point of the second set, it was all Scott City. The Lady Beavers scored nine of the next 10 points to build a 9-2 lead. Hugoton was able to get no closer than 15-9, as Scott City closed the second set and the match with five of the final six points in a 25-13 win.
Piper Fox had six kills, two block points and a service ace for Scott City, while Kinleigh Wren had four kills and four service aces.
Scott City completes the triangular sweep over Ulysses
Both teams entered 1-0 on the day in the finale for teams who met September 9. The opening set would be back and forth as the teams would be tied nine times in the first 13 points for each team. Scott City trailed 13-11 at the midway point of the first set, and scored the next four points to go up 15-13. They would never trail the rest of the night. That run would parlay to a 14-5 run to close the set out to win 25-18. The Lady Beavers opened up a 700 lead in the seconds set and the lead would grow to 9-2. Ulysses would get no closer than 9-5 near the midway point, as Scott City was able to control the set. Leading 18-11, they would outscore the Lady Tigers 7-2 to close the set and match out at 25-13.
Peyton Gentry had 11 kills unofficially to go along with one block point, while Piper Fox added six kills and a service ace and Kinleigh Wren had six kills and two service aces.
Scott City improved to 7-13 overall, 2-2 in GWAC play. They will continue a busy slate with the Scott City Invitational Vollebyall Tournament on Saturday. Ulysses is now 11-16 overall, 2-3 in league play, and will be at Wichita County for a dual on Monday. Hugoton is 4-18 overall, 0-6 in league play, as they will compete at the Oakley Tournament on Saturday.
