Scott City visits Goodland in a battle of 0-2 teams in district play
Scott City, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–Two teams looking for their first district win tonight, as the Goodland Cowboys play host to the Scott City Beavers in a District 8 matchup at Cowboy Stadium.
Scott City is in a bit of unfamiliar territory at 0-2 in district play, and 3-2 overall, after a 32-7 setback to the Holcomb Longhorns last Friday night. The Beavers had solid drives but were unable to finish them, going 0-3 in the red zone and committing three turnovers. Holcomb led 6-0 at the break and 18-0 after three quarters before Scott City was able to pull to within 18-7 early in the fourth quarter. Scott City gave up a season-high 469 yards of offense last week to the Longhorns with over 300 on the ground. The Beavers gained over 350 yards of offense with a balanced attack. Scott City is led by Cayden Couchman who has gained over 900 all purpose yards and six touchdowns, while Drew Metzger has passed for nearly 700 yards for a team that has averaged 27 points and just under 400 yards a game and have allowed 12 points and under 250 yards per game.
Goodland is looking to snap a three-game skid after a 28-24 loss at Colby last Friday night. The Cowboys led 12-6 at the break and found themselves trailing 28-12 in the fourth quarter, before their rally fell short. In the loss, Goodland outgained the Eagles 272-200 and had two turnovers, with one resulting in an Eagle pick-six. This year, the Cowboys have averaged 24 points and under 300 yards per game, while yielding 22 points and just over 250 yards per game. They are led by Chayton Goodwin, who has rushed for over 400 yards and four scores and Braylon Mull with three receiving touchdowns over 300 receiving yards.
The series has been dominated recently by Scott City, who has won 21 straight, and leads the all-time series 42-11. Scott City won at home 48-9 last year.
