Big second half pushes Scott City past Goodland

Goodland, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–Both Scott City and Goodland were in search for their first district win of the year. It was a game that was tightly contested in the first half. The second half was controlled by the Beavers, as they scored 28 consecutive points in the second half to pick up a 42-22 victory.

Goodland would put together a time-consuming opening drive that lasted just over seven minutes. They would convert a pair of fourth downs and on the 13th play of the drive, it was Reid Cure connecting with Jaxson Miller from 12 yards out with 4:59 left in the first quarter. Michael Johnston booted in the PAT to give the Cowboys the early 7-0 lead. The Beavers swiftly responded with a 65-yard drive in seven plays. Peyton Bergner finsished the drive off with a 26-yard touchdown run to tie the game at seven with the Pablo Solis kick.

Both teams would trade possessions, as Scott City would end their next drive at the Cowboy four. On the second play of the Goodland drive, Bergner would come up with an interception and return it 25 yards for a touchdown with 10 minutes left before halftime to give the Beavers a 14-7 lead with the Solis extra point. It was their 24th non-offensive touchdown since 2013 and the first interception return for a score since Alex Tarango’s 78 yard return at Colby last year. Scott City forced another turnover on an interception at the the Beavers 25. They would drive to the Cowboy 33 before fumbling on third down. Goodland put together a 10-play drive and scored with 33.3 seconds remaining before halftime on a Cure one-yard run to tie the game at 14 with the Johnston extra point.

The second half saw a dominant run for Scott City. They would use the ground game on their opening series of the second half, that was capped off by a one-yard run by Cayden Couchman with 8:10 left in the third frame to give the Beavers a 21-14 lead. Goodland would go three-and-out and Scott City used short field to give themselves a two-score advantage. Late in the third quarter, Matthew Wheeler found the end zone from a yard out to extend the lead to 28-14 with teh Solis PAT.

In the fourth quarter, Scott City would turn the ball over on downs on consecutive drives. However, the defense on Goodland’s first four possessions was solid, as they held the Cowboys to minus-27 yards of offense. After forcing a second straight turnover on downs, the Beavers delivered a blow with a Bergner 45-yard run with 6:20 left to extend the lead to 35-14. Goodland would fumble the exchange on the handoff on the ensuing kickoff and Scott City recovered at the Cowboy 12. On the very next play, Kevin Wiebe scored from 12 yards out to give the Beavers a 42-14 lead with 6:07 left. Goodland forced a fumble with 2:33 left in the game at the Scott City 20 yard line. Three plays later, back up quarterback Jaxson Miller scrambled and scored from 15 yards out, and he would connect with Braylon Mull on the two-point conversion to make it 42-22 with 1:35 left. The Beavers recovered the onside kick and ran the clock out to snap a two-game losing streak with the win 42-22.

Scott City would rush for a season-high 315 yards, led by Matthew Wheeler’s 107 yards on 17 carries and a touchdown, and Peyton Bergner’s 101 yards on seven carries and two touchdowns. Drew Metzger was 2-7 passing for 19 yards with a 10-yard pass to Adan Tarango and a nine-yard reception by Cayden Couchman. The Beavers finished with 334 yards of offense.

Goodland’s Reid Cure was 8-18 passing for 98 yards with a touchdown and two interceptions. Braylon Mull had three catches for 48 yards and he passed for 24 yards on 2-4 passing. The Cowboys rushed for 94 yards, led by Chayton Goodwin with 55 yards on 10 carries. They finished with 216 yards.

With the win, Scott City has now won 22 consecutive in the series, and now leads the all-time series 43-11. It was their 13th straight win at Goodland since 1998. The Beavers were able to avoid their first 0-3 start in district play, and have never had a season without a district win, when district play started in 1981. The Beavers picked up their fourth win, and have guaranteed their 38th non-losing season in the last 39 seasons. Goodland has lost five consecutive district games. They’ve lost four straight games this year.

Scott City is 4-2 overall, 1-2 in district play, as they will host Colby next Friday. The Eagles are also 1-2 in distrcit and 3-4 overall, after a 44-23 win at Lakin on Friday. Goodland is 2-5 overall and 0-3 in district play, as they head to Hugoton to face the Eagles next Friday to wrap up the regular season. Hugoton fell to Holcomb 20-14 at home for their first loss of the season.
