Scott City’s Felker/Edwards 8th in 4A State Doubles
Scott City, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–The Doubles team of Kaylee Felker/Finley Edwards had one big goal for the season: place at state. They would accomplish that feat with an upset along the way.
Felker & Edwards would return to state for a second straight year and this time, play on Saturday. The senior duo placed eighth at the Class 4A State Tournament in Prairie Village on Saturday.
Friday’s start would see them come out on top in their opening match against Pfeifer/Skov of Augusta and won 7-5, 6-7 and the tiebreaker 10-7 to advance to the round of 16, where they would fall to McPherson’s Liebl/Unruh and fell 6-0, 6-2. On the consolation side, they knocked out Clay Center’s Green/Pfizenmaier 8-1, setting up a match up with the fifth seed from Wichita Collegiate. They would go into a tiebreaker, and win it 9-8 (7) over Nichols/Shuart, advancing to Saturday
On Saturday after a delay due to wet courts, Felker and Edwards would avenge a regionals loss from last weekend and defeat Chapman’s Baer/Courtois. They would drop their next two matches, falling to McPherson’s Kuhn/Rodriguez 8-4 and in the seventh place match to Spicer/Urban of Marysville 8-3.
In the team race, Wichita Collegiate would be crowned the state champion with 43 points, with McPherson in second with 36 points and Topeka Hayden was third with 19 points. Scott City scored seven team points, good for 11th place.
