Lady Beaver volleyball season ends in Goodland Regional
Goodland, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–The Scott City Lady Beaver volleyball team saw their season come to a close on Monday inside the Max Jones Fieldhouse at the Class 3A Regional Volleyball Tournament.
Their first match of the day came against the top seed Goodland Cowgirls. Scott City fell behind early and fought their way to tie the set at six. A 7-2 run by Goodland pushed their lead to 13-8, as they would pull away after the Lady Beavers fought to within 15-12 in the middle of the set. The Cowgirls closed the first set with a 25-19 win. Scott City led 5-3 early in the second set, when the Cowgirls put together a run that would be insurmountable. A run of 12-2 gave Goodland a 15-7 lead, as they closed the match on a 10-3 run and completed the sweep with a 25-12 win. Peyton Gentry had seven kills and a block point for Scott City, while Piper Fox added six kills.
A quick turnaround for their second match of the day came against the Ellsworth Bearcats. Things looked good early on for Scott City, as they led most of the first set, building a 19-11 lead. However, a Lady Bearcat run of 9-1 tie the set at 20, and they would go on and close the set with three straight to win 25-22. The Lady Beavers led briefly 3-2 in the second set, but a run of 16-3 would bury Scott City, as Ellsworth completed the sweep with a 25-13 win. Piper Fox had seven kills and a block point to lead Scott City, while Peyton Gentry and Kinleigh Wren added five kills in the loss.
A final match of the season would conclude with a pair of teams who would already know that their season would be concluded after the match. Scott City would face Phillipsburg. The first set would see 10 ties and six lead changes. Phillipsburg led 19-18, when the Lady Beavers would score the next five points to take the match over for good, and pick up a 25-21 win. Scott City never trailed int he second set, racing out to a 7-1 lead. The Lady Panthers got as close as 19-16, but the Lady Beavers had enough to close things out and end their season with a win by taking the second set 25-18. Piper Fox finished with nine kills and Kinleigh Wren added seven and Peyton Gentry added five kills, while Valerya Castillo and Crissa Irvin combined for three service aces to close out their high school career.
Ellsworth would win the regional, as they swept Goodland in their final match of the day.
Scott City ends the season at 16-23 after Monday.
