Scott City, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–Tonight’s installment of the series between Colby and Scott City may not have a district championship on the line, but it does have some significance. The winner between the Eagles and Beavers will finish third in district play, while the loser will be the fourth place team, as the teams battle at 7 pm at Darner Field.

Scott City snapped a two-game losing streak last Friday by taking down the Goodland Cowboys 42-22 on the road. The game was tied at 14 at the break, before the Beavers unleashed their ground game and scored 28 consecutive points in the second half to avoid their first-ever 0-3 start in district play. They rolled up a season-high 313 yards on the ground and limited the Cowboys to 216 yards of offense. Peyton Bergner had three scores including a pick-six in the second quarter. This year, the Beavers have been averaging over 350 yards of offense and 29 points per contest, while giving up under 250 yards and 16 points per game. Three players have five rushing scores including Bergner, Cayden Couchman and Matthew Wheeler, while Drew Metzger has passed for four touchdowns and over 700 yards.

Colby has won two straight, as they rallied for a 44-23 road win at Lakin last Friday night. The Eagles coughed the ball up on their first two possessions last week, which resulted in two Bronc scores. They would take a 14-13 lead at the break and never look back. Maxson Smiley threw for 341 yards and three touchdowns, while Cody Wright rushed for 144 yards and three touchdowns in the win, as the Eagle offense put up 480 yards, while holding Lakin to 273. This year, Smiley has thrown for 1266 yards and 13 touchdowns and Wright has added 381 yards and five scores on the ground. Colby averages 27 points and 300 yards of offense while giving up 39 points and 371 yards per game.

This will be the 50th meeting in the series, as Scott City leads 31-18. The Beavers have won the last three games, including a 41-12 win at Colby last year. Colby’s last win in the series came in 2021 in a 44-14 victory. Their last win Scott City came in 1999 in a 14-7 district win.

It’s Senior Night at Darner Field. Kickoff is set for 7 pm, with a 6:30 pregame on KSKL Mix 94.5 and online at westernkansasnews.com. You can also catch it on the Beaver Broadcasting Network’s YouTube channel.
