Holcomb’s Deniston 3A Cross Country Champion; South Gray girls 2nd, Meade boys 3rd

There were several good results from the area at the state cross country championships on Saturday at two sites in the state. Class 6A, 5A and 3A were at Rim Rock Farm at Lawrence, while Class 4A, 2A and 1A ran at the Wamego Country Club.

Starting off with Class 6A boys at Rim Rock Farm, Garden City would finish sixth as a team and Dodge City was 12th. Two area athletes took home medals. Washburn Rural had 100 points and won the state title by one point over by Blue Valley with 101 points and Olathe West was third with 111 points. The Buffaloes had 159 points and the Red Demons finished with 219 points. Garden City’s Trevor Fry took home a third place finish and Dodge City’s Gerardo Gamez Mora was 16th. On the girls side, Dodge City was 10th overall with 233 points. Manhattan won the state title with 61 points, Shawnee Mission East was second with 81 points and taking third was Blue Valley West with 93 points. Lady Red Demon freshman Olivia Springer was the lone medalist from the area, as she placed 20th.

Class 6A Boys

Class 4A was held in Wamego, but didn’t have any area qualifiers as a team. However they did have one runner in Hugoton’s Kenzie Pike.

Class 4A Girls

In Class 3A, the Holcomb boys placed fourth with 124 points, Lakin sixth wth 150 points and Scott City was ninth with 208 points. Southeast of Saline won the meet with 57 points, followed by Wichita Trinity with 70 and West Franklin was third with 98 points. Holcomb’s Brody Deniston is the Class 3A boys state champion, while Lakin’s Zael Bermudez was eighth and Holcomb’s Jeb Stoppel placed 19th. For the girls, Scott City was sixth as a team with 171 points. Hesston was the state champion wiht 64 points, while Wichita Trinity was second with 84 points and Cheney was third with 94 points. Individual medalists from the area include Jyntri Wilson from Cimarron with a 15th place finish and Lakin’s Kate Miller was 16th.

Class 3A Boys

Class 2A at Wamego saw the Stanton County Boys place sixth as a team wiht 12 points. Hutchinson Trinity was the state champion with 64 points, edging Kansas City Christian who had 68 points and Central Heights was third with 80 points. There were no area medalists. For the girls, there were no area teams comepting. Kansas City Christian was the state champion with 75 points, followed by Berean Academy with 106 points and Hoxie was third with 120 points. Wichita County junior Joleigh Mazanec placed seventh in the girls race.

Class 2A Boys

In Class 1A at Wamego, the Meade Buffaloes finished third as a team with 97 points, while Spearville was 12th with 314 points. Quinter took the state title with 62 points, followed by Ness City with 79 points. Two area medalists made the top 20, as Meade’s Jordy Padgett was 14th and Satanta’s Edgar Najera was 18th. In the 1A girls race, Ness City would win the state title with 44 points, while the South Gray girls were second with 84 points and Centralia was third with 101 points. Two South Gray Lady Rebels would place, as Jenna Simmons was seventh, and Jacee Deges took eighth. Greeley County’s Jailyn Brandl placed ninth.
