Newton Kansan Athletes of the Week voting opens

The voting process of the Newton Kansan Athletes of the Week for Week 9 of the fall sports season has opened.

This week’s nominees are:                                                                                  

Boys

Eli Gaeddert, junior, Goessel High School, cross country. Won the Class 1A state title in a personal best  16:02.80 at the Wamego Country Club. He won the race over the defending state champion by 23.3 seconds.

Alex Toribio-Triana, senior, Newton High School, soccer. Scored three goals with an assist in a 5-0 Railer win over Goddard in the Class 5A regionals. Newton finished the week 2-0 to win the regional title.

Elijah Roth, senior, Moundridge High School, football. Had 37 carries for 276 rushing yards and two touchdowns in a 33-7 Wildcat win over Medicine Lodge in the Class 1A playoffs.

Girls

Addie Busenitz, sophomore, Berean Academy, cross country. Placed 18th in the Class 2A state meet in 20:36.44, leading the Warriors to a second-place team finish.

Addyson Reif, sophomore, Hesston High School, volleyball. Had two kills, 50 assists, 22 digs and two downed blocks at the Class 3A state tournament, as Hesston finished 1-2.

Chelsea Willour, senior, Remington High School, cross country. Placed ninth in the Class 2A girls’ race at the state cross country meet. Led the Broncos to a fifth-place team finish.

Voting is open until midnight Sunday and winners will be announced in the Kansan.

Nominees are selected from results reported to the Kansan as well as culled from various sports statistics sites.

Coaches and administrators may suggest nominees by e-mailing [email protected]. Please include the athlete’s statistics for the week and a photo. Three boys and three girls will be selected as nominees each week.
