Garden City, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–A vehicle-pedestrian accident occurred Wednesday morning resulting in minor injuries, according to a statement from the Garden City Police Department on Facebook.

During Wednesday morning’s drop-off at Garfield Early Childhood Center, a pedestrian accident occurred, resulting in a student being transported to the hospital with minor injuries. First responders arrived at the scene following reports of the incident. The investigation determined that a pickup truck driven by 56-year-old Jose Perez Castrellon, was traveling southbound on 8th Street. As he turned left onto Walnut Street, Perez Castrellon failed to yield and struck the student, who was crossing in the crosswalk with their parent.

The student was transported by Finney County EMS to St. Catherine Hospital for minor injuries and is on the mend.

Perez Castrellon was found to be driving with a suspended license. He was taken into custody and lodged in the Finney County Jail for Driving While Suspended (2nd) and cited for Failure to Yield to Pedestrians.

The GCPD would like to remind all drivers to be mindful and cautious in the school zones – slow down, stay alert, and yield to pedestrians and crossing guards – especially during drop-off and pick-up times. Drive safely as especially during this time of year when the sun is coming up later in the mornings and is directly in your line of sight, allow yourself enough time to get to school and other destinations. Additionally, stop for school buses. When a school bus stops with red flashing lights and extends a stop sign, all vehicles in both directions of travel must stop.
