Newton Kansan Athletes of the Week voting opens

The voting process of the Newton Kansan Athletes of the Week for Week 1 of the winter sports season has opened.

The site is at https://contests.cherryroad.com/event/1a74b41cc2f645c4. (A link can also be found at www.thekansan.com).

This week’s nominees are:

Boys

Tanner Scott, junior, Newton High School, swimming. Won the diving competition of the Newton Invitational I with a state qualifying score of 229.00.

Nolan Sweazy, senior, Berean Academy, basketball. Scored 17 points in a 55-43 win over Augusta in the season opener.

Tanner Copeland, sophomore, Hesston High School, boys’ swimming. Placed second in the 100-yard freestyle and fourth in the 50-yard freestyle at the Newton Invitational I, posting state consideration times in both events. Also led the 200-yard medley relay and 200-yard freestyle relay to sixth-place finishes.

Girls

Jaeann James, senior, Newton High School, wrestling. Won the 135 pound weight class at the Doug Kretzer Classic in McPherson.

Sheyenne Pinkston, senior, Remington High School, wrestling. Placed second at the Pratt Invitational at 125 pounds with a 3-1 record.

Adrienne Mullins, Berean Academy, senior, basketball. Scored 21 points in a 52-37 win over Augusta in the season opener.

Voting is open until midnight Sunday and winners will be announced in the Kansan.

Nominees are selected from results reported to the Kansan as well as culled from various sports statistics sites.

Coaches and administrators may suggest nominees by e-mailing [email protected]. Please include the athlete’s statistics for the week and a photo. Three boys and three girls will be selected as nominees each week.
