Newton Kansan Athletes of the Week voting opens

The voting process of the Newton Kansan Athletes of the Week for Week 5 of the winter sports season has opened.

The site is at https://contests.cherryroad.com/event/1a74b41cc2f645c4. (A link can also be found at www.thekansan.com).

This week’s nominees are:

Boys

Maddox Williams, senior, Newton High School, basketball. Scored 13 points in a 61-49 loss to Andover.

Mario Diaz, senior, Halstead High School, basketball. Scored 10 points in a 59-31 loss to Augusta.

Theo Busenitz, senior, Newton Mustangs, basketball. Scored nine points with 10 rebounds in a 59-46 loss to the Colby Homeschool.

Girls

Piper Schroeder, junior, Halstead High School, basketball. Scored 13 points in a 43-41 win over Augusta on the road. Schroeder hit two free throws with .8 seconds remaining to hand Halstead the win.

Gracie Good, freshman, Newton High School, basketball. Scored four points off the bench in an 80-18 loss to Andover.

Chloe Hoelscher, sophomore, Newton Mustangs, basketball. Averaging 11.2 points, 7.2 rebounds and 6.5 steals a game, leading the Mustangs to a 5-1 record.

Voting is open until midnight Sunday and winners will be announced in the Kansan.

Nominees are selected from results reported to the Kansan as well as culled from various sports statistics sites.

Coaches and administrators may suggest nominees by e-mailing [email protected]. Please include the athlete’s statistics for the week and a photo. Three boys and three girls will be selected as nominees each week.
