Newton Kansan Athletes of the Week voting opens

The voting process of the Newton Kansan Athletes of the Week for Week 6 of the winter sports season has opened.

This week’s nominees are:

Boys

Carter Zahn, freshman, Newton High School, swimming. Placed fourth in the 100-yard breaststroke, seventh in the 50-yard freestyle, sixth in the 200-yard medley relay and third in the 400-yard freestyle relay at the Newton Invitational II.

Tanner Copeland, sophomore, Hesston High School, swimming. Placed third in the 200-yard freestyle relay, seventh in the 100-yard breaststroke, fourth in the 200-yard medley relay at the Newton Invitational II.

Logan Overton, freshman, Halstead High School, wrestling. Placed third at the Charles McMillin Invitational in Herington at 190 pounds at 3-2 with two pins and a medical forfeit. He is 8-3 for the season.

Girls

Ryah Bristol, sophomore, Newton High School, wrestling. Placed fourth at the Dodge City Invitational at 140 pounds at 3-1. Is 15-3 for the season.

Samantha Strausz, senior, Moundridge High School, wrestling. Won the  170-pound class at the Charles McMillin Invitational in Herington at 4-0 with four pins. Is 7-0 for the season.

Addi Thompson, junior, Halstead High School, wrestling. Won the 155-pound class of the Charles McMillin Invitational at 3-0 with a pin, a decision and a technical fall. Is 11-8 for the season.

Voting is open until midnight Sunday and winners will be announced in the Kansan.

Nominees are selected from results reported to the Kansan as well as culled from various sports statistics sites.

Coaches and administrators may suggest nominees by e-mailing [email protected]. Please include the athlete’s statistics for the week and a photo. Three boys and three girls will be selected as nominees each week.
