Newton Kansan Athletes of the Week voting opens

The voting process of the Newton Kansan Athletes of the Week for Week 12 of the winter sports season has opened.

The site is at https://contests.cherryroad.com/event/1a74b41cc2f645c4. (A link can also be found at www.thekansan.com).

This week’s nominees are:

Boys

Exavier Torres, sophomore, Newton High School, Wrestling. Torres won the 132-pound weight class at the Class 5A Wes Region to qualify for state. He is 29-13 for the season.

Ryder Armstrong, sophomore, Remington High School, Wrestling. Won the 126-pound weight class at the Class 3-2-1A Region A to qualify for state. He is 18-12 for the season.

Lyndon Dillon, senior, Hesston High School, Wrestling. Placed third at the Class 4A Region A at 4-1 to qualify for state. He is 30-6 for the season.

Girls

Naomi Koontz, junior, Newton High School, Basketball. Scored 16 points in two games for the Railers.

Jordy Schroeder, junior, Halstead High School, Basketball. Scored 14 points in a Halstead win over top-ranked Little River to stay unbeaten.

Cammi Unruh, senior, Moundridge High School, Basketball. Scored 54 points in three games last week, all Moundridge wins.

Voting is open until midnight Sunday and winners will be announced in the Kansan.

Nominees are selected from results reported to the Kansan as well as culled from various sports statistics sites.

Coaches and administrators may suggest nominees by e-mailing [email protected]. Please include the athlete’s statistics for the week and a photo. Three boys and three girls will be selected as nominees each week.
