Newton Kansan Athletes of the Week voting opens

The voting process of the Newton Kansan Athletes of the Week for Week 14 of the winter sports season has opened.

The site is at https://contests.cherryroad.com/event/1a74b41cc2f645c4. (A link can also be found at www.thekansan.com).

This week’s nominees are:

Boys

Remington Burke, Newton High School, bowling. Burke rolled a 672 series to place 17th at the Class 5A state tournament, claiming Newton’s first state medal in nine years.

Ty Unruh, senior, Hesston High School, basketball. Scored 18 points in a 50-44 Swather win in the Class 3A sub-state finals.

Jace Unruh, junior, Berean Academy, basketball. Scored 22 points total in the Class 2A sub-state semifinals and finals, leading the Warriors to the sub-state title.

Girls

Onnyka Nedich, junior, Halstead High School, basketball. Scored eight points in a 50-37 Halstead win over Garden Plain in the Class 3A sub-state finals.

Callie Yoder, senior, Halstead High School, basketball. Scored 19 points in a 48-31 Swather win over Southeast of Saline in the Class 3A sub-state finals.

Cammi Unruh, senior, Moundridge High School, basketball. Scored 20 points in a 33-31 Wildcat win over Hillsboro in the Class 2A sub-state finals.

Voting is open until midnight Sunday and winners will be announced in the Kansan.

Nominees are selected from results reported to the Kansan as well as culled from various sports statistics sites.

Coaches and administrators may suggest nominees by e-mailing [email protected]. Please include the athlete’s statistics for the week and a photo. Three boys and three girls will be selected as nominees each week.
