Newton Kansan Athletes of the Week voting opens

The voting process of the Newton Kansan Athletes of the Week for Week 15 of the winter sports season has opened.

This week’s nominees are:

Boys

Drew Bartell, junior, Hesston High School, basketball. Scored 46 points with 15 rebounds in Class 3A state tournament, leading Hesston to third-place finish.

Wyatt Friesen, junior, Berean Academy, basketball. Scored 38 points with seven rebounds and 10 assists in Class 2A state tournament, leading Hesston to a second-place finish.

Jameson Miles, junior, Peabody-Burns, basketball. Was named first-team All-Wheat State League for 2025-26 season, leading the Warriors to the Class 1A, Division II sub-state semifinals.

Girls

Jacy Proctor, sophomore, Hesston High School, basketball. Scored 15 points with seven rebounds and three assists in a 54-45 loss to Silver Lake in the Class 3A state quarterfinals.

Piper Schroeder, junior, Halstead High School, basketball. Scored 35 points with 19 rebounds and 13 assists in Class 3A state tournament, leading Halstead to third-place finish.

Maci Kaminkow, senior, Moundridge High School, basketball. Scored 26 points with 24 rebounds in Class 2A state tournament, leading Moundridge to a fourth-place team finish.

Voting is open until midnight Sunday and winners will be announced in the Kansan.

Nominees are selected from results reported to the Kansan as well as culled from various sports statistics sites.

Coaches and administrators may suggest nominees by e-mailing [email protected]. Please include the athlete’s statistics for the week and a photo. Three boys and three girls will be selected as nominees each week.
