Scott City wins a pair of walk-off wins over Ulysses

Scott City, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–As the month of March closed out on Tuesday, Scott City would welcome in Ulysses for a pair of GWAC games on a day that was 20 degrees cooler than the previous day. A pair of games would come down to the end, as the Beavers would sweep the doubleheader in walk-off fashion, taking the first game 6-5 and rallying for an 8-7 win over the Tigers in game two.

The opener of the day may have seen its fair share of errors, but it saw a thrilling finish. Scott City would survive seven errors and nine runners left on base and come out with a win. They led 3-0 after three innings, when Ulysses would get on the board with a run in the fourth. The Beavers responded with two runs to extend their lead out to 5-2. Just when you thought they had contro, the Tigers would rally. Thanks to four straight errors to open the fifth, Ulysses clawed back in to the game to tie it at five. They would tie the game up with one out in the top of the seventh on a passed ball. With the last at bat, the Beavers would walk it off, as Junior Meza’s line drive shot ricoched off the third baseman’s glove and the winning run to give them a 6-5 win.

Easton Eisenhour gave up five unearned runs and picked up the win, going 6 1/3 innings. He surrendered three hits and had one strikeout. Teagan Feely and Aaren Radke each would drive in two runs for the Beavers. Jayden Urias took the loss, going 2 2/3 innings, allowing an unearned run on three hits with three strikeouts. Caden Ledesma went 3 2/3 innings, giving up five runs, three earned, on seven hits and struck out two. Three different Tigers had one hit each.

For the first time in the season, Ulysses had a lead and Scott City trailed. The Beavers got on the board in the bottom of the first inning, only to see the Tigers rally to tie the game in the second. After the teams traded a pair of runs in the second and third innings, Ulysses responded with a three-run rally with two outs in the top of the fourth to push ahead 6-3. Trailing for the first time this season, Scott City got one run back in the fifth, and tied the game with two in the sixth to make it six all. The Beavers tried to push the go ahead run in the bottom of the sixth, but they were tagged out. With two outs in the seventh, an infield hit would give Ulysses the lead back. In their last at bat again, the Beavers would come up clutch. Avery Radke’s RBI double tied the game at seven, and then an error by the Tigers allowed the game winning run to score, as they rallied for a second time on the day with an 8-7 win.

Spencer Cramer went 2 1/3 on the mound, giving up three runs, two earned, on two hits. Teagan Feeley went 1 1/3 innings, surrrendering three runs on four hits. Both pitchers kept their pitch count right at 45, and are eligible to pitch on Thursday. Aaren Radke would get the win, as he struck out five in 3 1/3 innings, giving up a run on two hits. Emilio Contreras had two hits and drove in three runs for the Beavers. Ulysses got three hits from Alex Hostetler, and two hits and three RBI from Tyce Perez. Corbin Lopez went four-plus innings, giving up four runs on two hits with six strikeouts. Taking the loss was Jayden Urias, who gave up two runs, one earned, on three hits. The Tigers left 13 on base in game two.

Scott City is 4-0 for a second straight year, and 2-0 in GWAC play. They will play at Spearville on Thursday. Ulysses drops to 0-4 overall, 0-2 in the GWAC. They will host Cimarron for a doubleheader next Tuesday.
