Newton Kansan Athletes of the Week voting opens

The voting process of the Newton Kansan Athletes of the Week for Week 2 of the spring sports season has opened.

This week’s nominees are:

Boys

Landyn Rains, sophomore, Newton High School, track. At the Vann Invitational in Winfield, Rains placed second in the 100-meter dash and third in the 200-meter dash.

Tim Rhodes, Hesston High School, baseball. In four games, Rhodes went seven for 15 hitting with two doubles, a triple, a home run and nine RBIs. He pitched three innings, allowing a run on two hits with four walks and six strikeouts.

Finn Lintecum, Moundridge High School, baseball. In two games, Lintecum went four for eight hitting with two RBIs.

Girls

Madyson Gomez, junior, Newton High School, soccer. Scored three goals with an assist at the McPherson Invitational at Newton placed seventh.

Elyse Griffin, senior, Hesston High School, softball, swimming. In four games, Griffin  went six of 13 hitting with a home run and 11 RBIs. She struck out 18. At the Wichita Heights Invitational, she placed 15th in the 100-yard backstroke, 21st in the 50-yard freestyle and was a member of the fifth-place 200-yard freestyle relay and eighth-place 200-yard medley relay.

Cambree Lawler, Remington High School, softball. In two games, Lawler allowed one run and no hits in 5.1 innings with 14 strikeouts. She won a no-hitter against Sterling. She went one for four hitting with an RBI.

Voting is open until midnight Sunday and winners will be announced in the Kansan.

Nominees are selected from results reported to the Kansan as well as culled from various sports statistics sites.

Coaches and administrators may suggest nominees by e-mailing [email protected]. Please include the athlete’s statistics for the week and a photo. Three boys and three girls will be selected as nominees each week.
