Lady Beavers split doubleheader with Goodland

Scott City, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–With all but certain a first round playoff game is secure, the Scott City Lady Beaver softball team played host to Goodland on Tuesday in hopes of possibly moving up in the regional standings. While they didn’t move up, they were able to salvage a split in the doubleheader, as the Cowgirls picked up a 4-2 game one win, and Scott City took the finale 9-7.

The opener would be a defensive battle. Following two scoreless innings, Goodland would be the first to strike, as they got an RBI single, and a three-run home run from Dani Fisher to give the Cowgirls a 4-0 lead. Scott City would put a run on the board in the fourth on a sac fly from Riley Suppes, and Suppes would score Peyton Gentry on a RBI single in the sixth. The Lady Beavers would leave several runners in scoring position in the final two innings, as they fell 4-2.

Goodland collected seven hits as Alessa Rickard drove in a run and had two hits, and Dani Fisher had a hit and three RBI. Alli Cure went all seven innings, giving up two runs on nine hits with seven strikeouts. Riley Suppes drove in both runs, and both runs were scored by Peyton Gentry. Crissa Irvin, Gentry and Baylee Wolkensdorfer each had two hits, as they outhit the Cowgirls 9-7. Wolkensdorfer gave up four runs on seven hits and recorded four strikeouts in seven innings in the circle.

Goodland got out quickly with a four-run first inning. Scott City would slowly get back in to the game, with a run in the first and second innings, and tie the game in the bottom of the third. After the Cowgirls went ahead 5-4 in the top of the fourth, the Lady Beavers would grab the lead for good with three runs. The teams would trade runs in the fifth and sixth, which was highlighted by a two-out solo home run by Riley Suppes to put Scott City up 9-7. The Lady Beavers retired Goodland in order in the seventh to preserve the split 9-7.

Riley Suppes gave up seven runs, six earned, on 10 hits, with five strikeouts in all seven innings of work. Crissa Irvin had three hits, while Piper Fox and Ava Deines had two hits and an RBI. Peyton Gentry drove in two runs, as did Adalei Zeller. Kaedence Smith gave up nine runs, three earned, on 12 hits in six innings in the circle. Elly Ever had three hits and drove in three runs, while Dani Fisher had two hits and two RBI.

After Tuesday, Scott City is 13-5 overall, 6-4 in GWAC play, and will host Elkhart on Thursday. Goodland is now 8-8 on the year, 5-3 in league play, as they will be at Russell/Victoria on Thursday.
