Class 2A: Sublette Boys 7th; Lewis wins two gold medals for Syracuse
Wichita, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–Two area schools would finish in the top 10 in the Class 2A State Track & Field Championships held on a warm and muggy weekend at Cessna Stadium in Wichita. This year’s event would feature nine lanes for the first time, and additional qualifiers in each event.
On the boys side, the highest finisher among area athletes would be Wichita County’s Beau Porter, who had to wait over 24 hours to get the javelin in, but it was worth the wait. The sophomore would place second. Smith Center rallied late to beat Hutchinson Trinity for the state title, while Moundridge placed third. Sublette was seventh, Stanton County tied for 15th, and Wichita County tied for 24th.
For the girls, Bronwyn Lewis from Syracuse set a meet record in the pole vault, and would win a jumpoff in the high jump to take two individual gold medals home. She won the pole vault for a second straight year. Hoxie would repeat as state champions, followed by Inman and Smith Center. Stanton County tied for ninth, Syracuse was 12th, Sublette was 37th, and Wichita County was 38th.
