Class 3A: Holcomb Boys win 3rd consecutive state title; Lakin Girls finish 5th
Wichita, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–It would be a weekend that would last deep into the night on Saturday night, and even into Sunday morning for the Class 3A State Track & Field Championships in Wichita. Saturday would see several records broken by a pair of area athletes. While it was a hot and muggy afternoon Saturday, storms delayed the final two events on a pair of occasions, and would push the handing out of medals and trophies in to early Sunday morning.
It would be a big day for Holcomb on Satuday, as Cooper Cranston broke the meet record in the 110M High Hurdles, and ran a faster time on Friday in the prelims with a time of 14.05. Senior Brody Deniston won the 3200M Relay on Friday night, and broke the meet record in the 1600M Run, and was second in the 800M Run, which his time broke the meet record. Scott City waited until around 11 pm Saturday night to win the 4x400M Relay in a thrilling finish, and their 4x800M Relay finished in second. The Holcomb boys would pull away from the 3A field Saturday afternoon, as they would win by 20 points over runner-up Southeast of Saline, while Wichita Collegiate was third. Scott City had another top 10 showing with a sixth place finish, Lakin was 26th and Cimmaron finished in a tie for 40th.
For the girls, Lakin’s Aryn Michaelis took home four medals, including a pair of second place finishes in the high jump and triple jump. Kinleigh Wren of Scott City would close out a stellar career with a second place finish in the 400M Dash, and took home three additional medals. Their 4x100M and 4x400M Relays would break school records in the prelims on Friday. Lakin would put together a top five finish for the second straight year with a fifth place finish. Scott City was eighth, Cimarron was 12th and Southwestern Heights finished tied for 34th.
