U.S. 83 construction project to close E. Parallel Road access and U.S. 83B ramp
The Kansas Department of Transportation plans to temporarily close access to E. Parallel Road from U.S. 83 south of Garden City beginning June 1. The closure is expected to remain in place for approximately three weeks.
In addition, the ramp connecting U.S. 83B to U.S. 83 will close beginning June 8 and remain closed for the duration of the project. Southbound U.S. 83B traffic should use the U.S. 83B/U.S. 83 intersection to access U.S. 83.
The closures are necessary to allow crews to complete earthwork for the new U.S. 83 alignment. Motorists should plan ahead and use appropriate alternate routes during the closures.
The project extends from approximately 2.5 miles north of the Haskell-Finney county line to the bridge over the Arkansas River, about 12.7 miles. U.S. 83 will be realigned and reconstructed into a Super 2 highway featuring alternating side-by-side passing lanes.
Additional county road closures are expected later in this construction season. KDOT will continue to provide updates on construction activities and traffic impacts as work progresses.
Sporer Land Development Inc., of Oakley, is the contractor on the $44.5 million project. Construction is expected to be completed by the end of October 2027, weather permitting.
