GCCC Names Dr. Lance Hawvermale Vice President for Instructional Services/Chief Academic Officer

Garden City, KS–Garden City Community College is pleased to announce Dr. Lance Hawvermale has been named Vice President for Instructional Services/Chief Academic Officer, beginning July 1, 2026. 

In this role, Dr. Hawvermale will provide leadership for the college’s academic programs, instructional innovation, and workforce alignment while overseeing instructional services and academic support operations across the institution.

Dr. Hawvermale brings more than 15 years of experience in community college education and administration, with expertise in academic leadership, accreditation, student success initiatives, and expanding access to affordable, high-quality education.

He previously served as Dean of Humanities and Fine Arts at Ranger College, where he led academic programs across multiple campuses and oversaw faculty, curriculum development, assessment, and strategic planning. In addition to his administrative leadership, he also taught English courses as a professor.

Throughout his career, Dr. Hawvermale has led major institutional initiatives focused on accreditation, retention, and continuous improvement. His work includes the development and successful approval of multiple Quality Enhancement Plans (QEPs) tied to regional reaccreditation efforts, as well as initiatives designed to strengthen student support and academic achievement.

Beyond his leadership roles, Dr. Hawvermale serves as a Graduate Faculty Associate at Kansas State University, mentoring doctoral students in the Community College Leadership Program.

Dr. Hawvermale holds a Doctor of Education in Community College Leadership from Kansas State University, a Master of Liberal Arts from Fort Hays State University, and a Bachelor of Arts in English and History from Northwestern Oklahoma State University.
