Three area athletes to compete in 53rd Annual Kansas Shrine Bowl Saturday
Emporia, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–The 53rd Annual Kansas Shrine Bowl will take place on Saturday evening at Welch Stadium in Emporia, as East meets West in the game that benefits Shriners Hospitals. Kickoff is set for 7 pm.
Three area athletes will be representing their high schools one final time, as they take the field for the West team
Garden City’s Jhett Price is a linebacker and will follow in his father’s footsteps by participating in the game. His dad, Joe, represented Holcomb in the 1998 Shrine Bowl game, and currently serves as the Garden City High School head football coach. Price will stay local to play football, as he will play at Garden City Community College.
Holcomb’s representitve is Matthew Rosen. The offensive lineman was coached by Trey Teeter, as he will play football at Central Missouri in Warrensburg.
The third area athlete is Hugoton’s Miguel Hernandez, Jr. Herandez, Jr is a defensive back and will play football collegiately at Southwestern College in Winfield. He was coached by Jay Witt.
Coaching the West squad is Mulvane’s Daniel Myears, assisted by Junction City’s Randall Zimmerman, Erin Beck from Great Bend, Dawson Elliott from Augusta, Pratt’s Brent Hoelting, Garden Plain’s Todd Rice, and Brent Schneider from Sterling.
The West leads the series 32-18-2. Last year at Dodge City’s Memorial Stadium, the West picked up a 26-8 win. It will be the seventh time the game will be played in Emporia.
