U.S. 83 construction project to close E. Pete Smith Road access south of Garden City

Posted July 1, 2026

The Kansas Department of Transportation will temporarily close the E. Pete Smith Road access from U.S. 83, south of Garden City, beginning July 1. The closure is expected to last approximately three weeks. Parallel Road, previously closed, will reopen.

The ramp connecting U.S. 83B to U.S. 83 will remain closed for the duration of the project. Southbound U.S. 83B travelers should use the U.S. 83B/U.S. 83 intersection to access U.S. 83.

These closures are necessary to allow crews to complete earthwork for the new U.S. 83 alignment. Motorists are encouraged to plan ahead and use alternate routes as needed.

The project spans approximately 12.7 miles, from about 2.5 miles north of the Haskell-Finney county line to the bridge over the Arkansas River. Work includes reconstructing and realigning U.S. 83 into a Super 2 highway with alternating passing lanes.

Additional county road closures are anticipated later this construction season. KDOT will provide updates on traffic impacts as work progresses.

Sporer Land Development Inc., of Oakley, is the contractor on the $44.5 million project, which is expected to be completed by the end of October 2027, weather permitting.
