Texas woman dies in Edwards County accident

Edwards County, Kan.–A Texas woman died in a three-vehicle accident just before 3 p.m. Tuesday, just east of the U.S. Highway 50/Kansas Highway 19 junction in Edwards County.

According to the Kansas Highway Patrol, a 2020 Jeep Cherokee driven by 34-year-old Sara Garza of Hale, Texas was eastbound on U.S. Highway 50, when she attempted to pass an eastboudn 2000 Freightliner semi driven by 67-year-old David Borntrager of Haven. Garza collided head-on with a westbound 2007 Chevy Silverado driven by 17-year-old Joseph Manuel Marquez of Lewis. The Garza vehicle rotated counter clockwise and also struck the semi.

Garza was transported to Hays Medical center where she was pronounced dead. Marquez was taken to Edwards County Hospital for suspected serious injuries and Borntrager was uninjured. The KHP report states that Marquez was not wearing a seatbelt, while the others in the accident were.
