Conquistadors drop opening game against New Mexico Military Institute

The Dodge City Community College football team opened their season with a 37-20 loss on the road to New Mexico Military Institute.

The Conquistador offense found success on their first play, as running back Joshua Taylor scored a 75-yard touchdown after New Mexico Military Institute’s opening drive ended in a field goal.

Omarion Lewis grabbed two touchdowns in the first half, including a 76-yard score.

New Mexico Military Institute’s first half success was aided by a kickoff return for a touchdown and three field goals. At Halftime it was 23-20 in favor of the Broncos.

In the second half Dodge City got the ball first but threw an interception that was returned for a touchdown. The pick gave the New Mexico Military Institute defense the momentum, as they pitched a second half shutout on their way to the 37-20 win.

Dodge City quarterback Tim Carpenter threw for 157 yards and two touchdowns, while also running for 78 yards. Taylor’s 75-yard touchdown helped him toward a 105-yard day on the ground.

Up next, Dodge City will have the week off before playing Garden City on Sept. 5.
