Goals remain the same for Scott City Cross Country
Scott City, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–While the 2026 version of the Scott City cross country team is young, the goal for the two seniors on the squad remain the same. Get to state. This year’s team has 15 runners out, with eight boys and seven girls.
The team is wrapping up their first week of practice, and has been running through the heat of the afternoon, in preperation for the heat early in the year. Their first morning practice took place Friday morning and will get one more practice in the opening week on Saturday.
Michael Hermosillo and Carson Gabel return as the top runners for the boys side. Hermosillo has been on the cusp of a top 20 finish in his first two seasons. Hannah Winter and Phebe Trout are the top returners on the girls team.The boys placed 9th in Class 3A a year ago, while the girls were 6th at state.
This year will be the first year that Scott City will open their season at Great Bend on September 3. The meet features over 20 schools from all six classifications. Regionals will be set up differently this season with a new format. In Class 3A, the teams will be seeded by performance with 32 schools in the west, and will be divided in the 16-team regionals.
Joey Meyer enters his seventh season as the head coach, and Shannon York is in her second year as an assistant.
