Area runners start season well at Great Bend Cross Country Invitational

Great Bend, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–Several area schools made the early morning trip to Great Bend for the Great Bend Cross Country Invitational at Lake Barton Thursday Morning. Over 20 schools covering all six classifications competed in the morning, ahead of the heat expected to take over in the afternoon.

Starting off with the girls, where Bishop Carroll dominated the meet, winning by 64 points over runner-up SE of Saline, while Great Bend & Salina Central tied for third. Dodge City finished 7th, Lakin was 10th, Garden City 11th, Scott City was 15th and Southwestern Heights came in 16th. The highest area finisher was Lakin’s Kate Miller, who came in fifth place, while Dodge City’s Olivia Springer was ninth. Garden City was led by a 54th place finish from Liliana Romero, Scott City got a 29th place finish from Hannah Winter and SW Heights saw Hannah Fieser place 52nd.

Bishop Carroll’s boys completed the sweep for the Golden Eagles, winning by 14 points over Maize, while Dodge City and Garden City rounded out the top four. Holcomb was sixth, Scott City was ninth and Lakin took 11th. Holcomb’s Jeremiah Gonzalez was the top area runner, placing fourth, while Michael Hermosillo from Scott City was seventh. Lakin’s Miles Delgado led the Broncs with an 11th place finish, while Garden City’s Elmer Argueta was 14th and Domingo Lorenzo Ramos led the Red Demons with a 16th place finish.
