Labor Day fire in Garden City displaces residents

Garden City, Kan.–Just after noon on Monday, the Garden City Fire Department responded to a reported structure fire at 2200 block Crestway Drive, Garden City, KS.

Upon arrival, fire crews observed heavy smoke and fire coming from a four-plex apartment building. Firefighters successfully completed a search of the affected and adjoining units. One pet was rescued from an apartment during the search; all other residents safely escaped the apartments without injury prior to the arrival of fire personnel. Firefighters quickly extinguished a heavy fire involving an attached shed on the front of the building, performed vertical ventilation, and accessed the attic area to locate and extinguish additional fire.

Firefighters remained on scene to monitor the structure for hotspots after the main fire was extinguished. Crews were dispatched back to the building twice later in the day after reports of smoke. On both occasions, little to no smoke was visible and no active fire was located. Fire personnel continued to monitor the building throughout the night with no further issues reported.

Ten residents were displaced by the fire. The building owner and the American Red Cross assisted residents with temporary living arrangements. No injuries were reported among residents or fire personnel. The cause and origin of the fire remains under investigation, and damage estimates are not yet known.
