Illegal Alien with Final Removal Order Charged in Connection with Kansas Homicide That Never Should Have Happened

TOPEKA–Kansas Attorney General Kris Kobach announced that Erlin Y. Lagos-Gonzales, 43, of Garden City, has been charged with voluntary manslaughter in the August 31, 2026, killing of Adonis Edgardo Aguilar-Juarez at a livestock facility in Kearny County.

Lagos-Gonzales is a citizen of Honduras, and a final order of removal was issued against him by a U.S. immigration judge in absentia on July 24, 2025.

“This killing never should have happened,” Attorney General Kobach said. “Erlin Lagos-Gonzales is an illegal alien who received a final order of removal more than a year ago. He should have left the United States then. Instead, he remained in Kansas, continued working, and now stands charged with taking the life of another man. There are more than 1.5 million such alien fugitives in the United States. It is essential that law-enforcement agencies like KBI collaborate with ICE to locate and remove these aliens.”

The complaint alleges that on or about August 31, 2026, Lagos-Gonzales unlawfully, feloniously, and knowingly killed Aguilar-Juarez upon a sudden quarrel or in the heat of passion, or upon an unreasonable but honest belief that circumstances justified the use of deadly force, a severity level 3, person felony.

Lagos-Gonzales was charged in Kearney County District Court on September 3, 2026.  Bond is set at $500,000 cash or corporate surety, with conditions including no law violations, personal attendance at all hearings, and no contact with listed witnesses. Lagos-Gonzales remains in custody.  A First Appearance was held on September 8, 2026, before District Magistrate Judge Darrell Walters. 

The case is being prosecuted by Assistant Attorney General John D. Hatcher, with the assistance of Kearny County Attorney Eloy Gallegos. The investigation has been conducted by the Kearny County Sheriff’s Office with assistance from the Kansas Bureau of Investigation and Finney County Sheriff’s Office.

Lagos-Gonzales is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in a court of law.
