Scott City girls tennis competes at Hoisington; volleyball splits home triangular
Scott City, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–Fresh out of the Labor Day weekend, the Scott City girls tennis team and volleyball squad took to the courts on Tuesday.
Starting with tennis, they would compete at the Hoisington Invitational. The start time was pushed up to 9 am due to the heat. Their highest finish came from the No. 2 Doubles team of Shelby Massaglia/Hayla Edwards, who place third. Fourth place finishes came from Keri Crisler at No. 1 Singles and the No. 1 Doubles team of Adalei Zeller/Ayva Smith. Placing sixth at No. 2 Singles was Allie Plummer. Up next is the Phillipsburg Invitational on Tuesday, September 15.
In Scott City, it was the home opener for the Lady Beaver volleyball team. They would take their opening match against Ulysses, winning 25-20, 25-17. They never trailed in the first set and maintained a lead no bigger than six. In the second set, there would be four lead changes and six ties, before Scott City pulled away to sweep the Lady Tigers. Maddie Goode had nine kills and Peyton Gentry added six kills. Harper Stoppel had three service aces, and Kinleigh Hickey added two. In the finale, a match that went back and forth throughout would see the Goodland Cowgirls win 22-25, 25-23, 25-21. The opening set had ten ties and and eight lead changes. The Lady Beavers rolled off six straight to pull out the opening set win. The second set saw 11 ties and three lead changes. Scott City led 23-22, before the Cowgirls closed the set out with three straight to force a third set at 25-23. The Lady Beavers led early on in the third set, but Goodland would take the lead at 3-2 and never surrender it the rest of the way, despite three total ties. The Cowgirls went on to win 25-21. Peyton Gentry led the way with 11 kills and four service aces, while Maddie Goode had six kills, and Adda Gossman and Payson Campbell had two block points apiece. Ulysses defeated Goodland 25-23, 25-23 in the first match of the afternoon. Scott City is 2-4 and will face Hill City and Hoxie at the Hoxie Triangular on Thursday.
