Scott City volleyball splits home triangular
Scott City, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–The Scott City Lady Beaver volleyball team return to the home courts on Tuesday, playing hosts to Dighton and Victoria in a triangular. Scott City would split with a loss to Dighton 20-25, 29-27, 25-23 and rallied late in the second set for the win in the finale against Victoria 25-21, 25-23. Victoria swept Dighton earlier in the day with a 25-23, 25-9 win.
In Scott City’s opening set, the Lady Beavers trailed 4-1 early on, when they used an 11-1 run to lead 12-5. The Lady Hornets would find a way to slowly chip away at the deficit after they trailed 17-8. Dighton went on a 12-4 run to pull to within 21-20. Scott City got a sideout and closed the opening set with three straight to win 25-20. The second set would feature 18 ties and 12 lead changes. Neither side was able to lead by more than two points throughout as it went to extra points. The Lady Hornets broke a 27-all tie with the final two points to win 29-27. In set three, it looked like Scott City was going to run away with the set. The Lady Beavers raced otu to a 12-4 lead, when Dighton responded with a 11-2 run to take their first lead at 15-14. Scott City led 16-15, before the Lady Hornets rallied for five straight, and would hold off the Lady Beavers on their second match point and came out with the 25-23 win. Scott City was led by Maddie Goode with 12 kills, while Peyton Gentry had eight kills and two service aces. Eva Armendariz had three aces and Lily Lightner had five kills. Payson Campbell had six kills and two block points for the Lady Beavers in the loss against the new No. 10 ranked team in Class 1A, Division II.
The next match would be against the current No. 8 team in Class 1A, Division II in Victoria. Scott City would build a lead of 14-5 in the opening set, thanks to a 14-4 run. The Lady Knights did respond and inch closer with a trio of runs, and got to wihtin 20-18 late in the first set. In the end, the Lady Beavers did enough to secure the opening set 25-21. Victoria led the second set for all but the very end. The Lady Knights raced out to a 14-7 lead and led 18-11 before Scott City started creeping back into the set. A run of 8-3 pulled Scott City to within 21-19. Victoria led 22-20, when the Lady Beavers went on the attack, and took their first lead a 23-22. After the Lady Knights got the sideout to tie the set at 23, Scott City closed with the final two points of the set and match to win a thriller 25-23. Peyton Gentry had nine kills and a service ace to lead thea ttack, while Maddie Goode added four kills and two aces.
Scott City is now 4-6 on the season and will be in Garden City for a triangular on Thursday, taking on Pratt and Ulysses.
