Scott City, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–Week 3 of high school football will feature a pair of teams in search for their first win of the season in a 7 pm kickoff at Darner Field, as Scott City plays host to the Russell Broncos.

Russell is 0-2 on the season, following a 35-6 loss to TMP Marian last Friday night in Hoisington. The Broncos have not been able to play at home due to field repairs caused by a spring storm. They trailed 21-0 before getting on the board, but gave up a pair of scores in the third and fourth quarter to the Moncarchs in the loss. The Broncos gave up over 300 yards on the ground and were outgained 376-285. Russell is coming off a 7-3 season a year ago and is a young squad, led by sophomore quarterback Braigan Dinkel, who has thrown for 250 yards and two scores. Through two games, the Broncos have given up 44 points and over 400 yards of offense, while scoring an average of 14 points and 211 yards per game.

Scot City is 0-2 for the first time since 2016, following a 44-14 loss to Mesa Ridge, CO last Friday night. The Beavers scored the first points of the game in the second quarter, only to see the Grizzlies rattle off 22 straight, and score on six of their seven possessions in the middle of the game. They also scored the first touchdown of the second half, and gave up 22 straight to close out the scoring. Scott City was outgained 383-184 in the game, and were held to under 100 yards rushing. This year, the Beavers have averaged 21 points and over 250 yards of offense, while giving up 46 points and over 400 yards per game through the first two contests. Drew Metzger has four total touchdowns, three passing, and has passed for over 250 yards and is under 200 yards rushing through two games.

This is the first time the teams have played outside of district play. Their last meeting was a Class 3A, District 6 matchup in week 5 of the 2021 season, where Russell rallied late to win 12-7 at Darner Field. Scott City leads the series 5-1.
