Hugoton outlasts Scott City
Scott City, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–In a battle of 1-3 teams, Scott City and Hugoton met up on a cool and nice Friday night of football at Darner Field. While it was the district opener for the Beavers, the Eagles were looking to remain unbeaten in district play. Hugoton made enought plays and spoiled Scott City’s homecoming in a 26-19 win to improve to 2-0 in Class 3A, District 8.
The Eagles burned off 5:11 on their opening drive. On fourth down, Isaai Betance connected with Adrian Adigun on a 48-yard touchdown pass with 6:49 left in the first quarter to give Hugoton a 6-0 lead, after the extra point was blocked. After Scott City fumbled on their first offensive play at their own 29, it would take the Eagles another eight plays and over four minutes to get their second score. With 2:03 remaining in the opening frame, Isai Guardado found the end zone from three yards out to extend the lead to 12-0. The two-point conversion was no good.
Scott City got their first points of the game on the ensuing drive. A 15-play drive was capped off by a Drew Metzger one-yard run with 6:39 remianing in the first half to get the Beavers to within 12-7 with the Pablo Solis PAT. The Eagles drove down the field, but would be intercepted in the end zone, giving Scott City an opportunity to potentially take the lead before the break. A promising drive would result in an interception by Hugoton at the Scott City 24 with under a minute in the second quarter.
After the Beavers went three-and-out to begin the third quarter, the Eagles used another time consuming drive to extend their lead. A nearly five-minute drive resulted in a Guardado one-yard run with 5:28 left in the third period to push the lead to 18-7. Scott City’s next drive took them early into the fourth quarter. A 17-play drive that took nearly seven minutes off the clock resulted in a Pablo Solis 24-yard field goal with 10:33 left to pull them to within 18-10.
Hugoton was forced to punt, and the Beavers would have great field position at their own 45. The Eagles would shut Scott City down in four straight plays, and capitalize on the short field. A two play drive resulted in a 32-yard touchdown run by Guardado with 5:37 left gave Hugoton a 26-10 lead with the two-point conversion.
Scott City bounced back and got down the field and scored in less than a minute. Metzger scored from 10 yards out with 4:39 left to get them to within 26-16, but missed the two point conversion. The Beavers would stuff Hugoton on a three-and-out again inside their own 10 yard line. They got a blocked punt and were set up at their own five. However, Scott City would lose yardage have to settle for a Solis 30 yard field goal with 2:37 left to get the Beavers to within 26-19.
The onside kick attempt for Scott City was unsuccessful, and Hugtoon picked up a first down to run the clock out to pick up the win.
Hugoton finished with 376 yards of offense, with 227 coming on the ground. Isai Guardado rushed for 186 yards on 28 carries and three scores, and Isaai Betance was 10-12 for 149 with a touchdown and interception. Adrian Adigun had five receptions for 87 yards anda touchdown.
Scott City had 295 yards of offense with 203 on the ground. Drew Metzger rushed for 75 yards on 16 carries and two rushing scores and threw for 91 yards on 8-12 passing with an interception. Adan Tarango had five receptions for 38 yards.
Hugoton has won two straight in the series for the first time since 2004 and 2005. It’s also their first win at Scott City since 2004. Scott City now leads the all-time series 35-12-1. The Beavers are 1-4 for the first time since 1977.
Up next for 2-3 Hugoton is their final home game of the regular season, as they host Ulysses next Friday. The Tigers improved to 4-1 after they outlasted Goodland on the road 42-36. Scott City will take on 4-1 Holcomb, who won at Colby 64-24 on Friday.
