Holcomb plays host to Scott City in district play

Holcomb, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–A rivalry is renewed tonight at Holcomb High School, as the Longhorns will play host to the Scott City Beavers in Class 3A, District 8 play.

Scott City is 1-4 overall, 0-1 in district play, following a 26-19 loss to the Hugoton Eagles last Friday night at home. The Beavers fell behind early 12-0 and trailed 12-7 at the break, and could not overcome the deficit. They would be outgained 376-290 in the contest, and 227-190 on the ground. Scott City is led this year by senior quarterback Drew Metzger, who has thrown for under 500 yards and has rushed for nearly 450 yards with 10 total touchdowns. Easton Eisenhour powers a defense with over 60 tackles and an interception that he returned for a touchdown. The Beavers average 21 points and over 250 yards of offense, while giving up 32 points and 360 yards per game.

Holcomb enters as a top five team in Class 3A at 4-0 on the year, and are 2-0 in district play, following their 64-24 thrashing of Colby on the road last Friday. The Longhorns led 27-0 at the break and never looked back en route to the win. They put up 533 yards of offense, with 367 coming on the ground, while giving up 171 yards to the Eagles, with just 16 of those yards rushing. Holomb is led by junior Cooper Cranston, who has just under 400 yards rushing and 300 yards passing with 13 total touchdowns, and Chasyn Cosner’s seven rushing scores and under 500 yards on the ground. The Longhorns are putting up nearly 40 points a game and giving up 19 yards a contest while averaging nearly 350 yards per game.

Tonight’s contest will be the 29th meeting all time, with Scott City holding a 21-7 advantage. The Longhorns have won two consecutive, including their 32-7 win at Scott City last season.
