Lady Beavers vollebyall sweeps home GWAC triangular

Scott City, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–It was Senior Night and the home finale on Thursday for Scott City, as they played host to Colby and Goodland in a GWAC Triangular at the Scott Community Events Center. The night would belong to the Lady Beavers, as they picked up a pair of three-set victories, starting off with a 29-31, 25-19, 25-21 win over Goodland, and holding off Colby 25-13, 22-25, 25-18 in the finale. Goodland swept the Lady Eagles 25-17, 25-13 in the opener for the day.

Scott City’s opening set would be a thriller against Goodland. It saw 14 ties and nine lead changes, as the set went to extra points. The Lady Beavers led 12-11 when the Cowgirls went on a run to take at 15-12 lead. Scott City had set poitn at 24, 26, 27 and 29, while Goodland had set point at 25, 28 and 30, before getting the win 31-29 in the opener. In the second set, the lead would be exchanged four times, before the Lady Beavers took the lead for good at 17-14, running four straight points. The Cowgirls pulled to within 19-17, before Scott City used a 6-2 run to close the set and force a third set with a 25-19 win. Goodland led 6-5 early on in the third set, when the Lady Beavers ran five straight points to lead 10-6. The Lady Beavers never trailed the rest of the way, as the Cowgirls could get no closer than 19-18 late in the match. Scott City would take the final set with a 25-21 win.

Peyton Gentry led the way for Scott City with 12 kills, while Maddie Goode added nine kills and two service aces. Katie Weathers and Lily Lightner had four kills apiece.

Following the Senior Night ceremony, the Lady Beavers took on Colby for a third time this year. Both teams have won one match apiece entering the match. The opening set was dominated by Scott City, as they made a big rally in the middle of the set. After the Lady Eagles trailed 11-9, the Lady Beavers closed the set on a 14-4 run to take the opener 25-13. The second set saw Colby jump out to an early 5-1 lead. Scott City would come back with a run of 13-4 to lead 14-9. They led 19-13 towards the latter part of the second set when it looked like they would cruise to a win. The Lady Eagles had other thoughts in mind, using a 9-1 run to lead 22-20. Colby would force a third set with the final three points in a 25-22 set two win. Scott City never trailed in the third set, but were unable to put the Lady Eagles away early on. They scored six of the next seven points in the middle of the final set after Colby got to within 9-6. That proved to be the difference. The Lady Eagles pulled to within 21-17, when Scott City scored four of the final five points to take the set and match 25-18.

Katie Weathers came up big for the Lady Beavers with nine kills and a block point to lead the way, while Peyton Gentry added six kills and two service aces. Payson Campbell had three block points for Scott City.

With the win, Scott City improves to 19-11 on the year, and will be the second seed in the GWAC Volleyball Tournament on Saturday. They’ll have Cimarron and Ulysses in their pool. After Thursday, Goodland is 20-9 and Colby is 11-16.
