Longhorns blank Scott City
Holcomb, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–Friday’s game with Scott City and Holcomb saw a pair of teams on the opposite side of the spectrum, as the Beavers looked to snap a two-game skid, and the Longhorns looked to keep their momentum going in March. It would be all Holcomb on the scoreboard as they scored on all four of their possessions of the second half in a 38-0 win at Holcomb High School.
After Scott City went three-and-out on their opening drive, the Longhorns needed just three plays to get on the board. With 8:59 left in the opening frame, Cooper Cranston scored from 37 yards out to give them the early 7-0 lead with the Jayce Rodriguez PAT.
It wasn’t until late in the second quarter when Holcomb would get on the board again. Another three play drive resulted in a Cranston 56-yard touchdown run with 3:57 left before halftime to extend the lead to 14-0 wiht the Rodriguez extra point.
Scott City put together a good drive, but a Longhorn interception with 11 seconds left before halftime in the red zone ended their threat. The Beavers ran 36 plays compared to Holcomb’s 18 in the first half, but were unable to finish their drives off.
The Longhorns doubled their lead in the third quarter as Cranston scored his third rushing touchdown with 8:24 left in the third stanza to push the lead to 21-0, and with 1:33 remaining in the third, a fourth and two play resulted in a Cranston to Reese Rome three yard touchdown pass to get the advantage to 28-0.
Freshman kicker Jayden Rodriguez booted home a 23-yard field goal with 9:35 left to increase Holcomb’s lead to 31-0, and with 2:19 left, Ryan Wickwar connected with Brooks Scherrer on a nine-yard pass to make the final 38-0.
Cooper Cranston had 145 yards on seven carries and three touchdowns, and completed 3-4 passes for 43 yards with a touchdown, to go along with a 36-yard reception in the third quarter. The Longhorns finished wiht 415 yards of offense, with 297 coming on the ground.
Scott City finished with 149 yards of offense, as Drew Metzger passed for 60 yards on 10-18 passing with an interception, and rushed for 51 yards on 13 carries.
With the win, Holcomb has won three straight in the series for the first time. Scott City leads the series 21-8. The Beavers are 1-5 for the first time since 1977. Holcomb has clinched a first round home playoff spot, improving to 3-0 in district play.
Scott City is 1-5, and 0-2 in district play, as they will host Goodland for Senior Night next Friday. The Cowboys blanked Colby 50-0 to improve to 4-2 on the year, and 1-1 in district play. Holcomb is 5-1 on the year, and can clinch the district title and GWAC title outright next Friday, as they host Hugoton. The Eagles have won three straight, after they stunned Ulysses 58-28 on their Senior Night on Friday.
